A Perfect Getaway to Savannah, Georgia

If you've been looking for a destination full of Southern charm, rich history, amazing food, and plenty to explore on foot, let me introduce you to one of my new favorite cities—Savannah, Georgia.

Recently, I spent 2 nights and 2½ days exploring Savannah, and it was the perfect amount of time to experience many of the city's highlights while still leaving plenty of reasons to come back.

Where We Stayed

We stayed at the Hyatt Regency Savannah, and I can't recommend the location enough. Situated right along River Street, the hotel puts you within walking distance of restaurants, shops, historic landmarks, and the beautiful Savannah River.

One of my favorite parts of the trip was simply walking along the riverfront. Watching the massive cargo ships pass by while enjoying the historic buildings, unique shops, and lively atmosphere made for the perfect way to spend an afternoon.

River Street Adventures

River Street is truly the heart of Savannah. Every few steps you'll find another locally owned shop, historic building, or restaurant with incredible views of the river.

One evening, we enjoyed some delicious barbecue while overlooking the water. There's something special about great food paired with beautiful waterfront views and live music drifting through the streets.

No matter what time of day you're exploring, River Street has a relaxed energy that makes you want to slow down and take it all in.

A Hidden Gem: Plant Riverside District

One of the biggest surprises of our trip was exploring the JW Marriott Savannah Plant Riverside District.

Even if you're not staying there, it's absolutely worth visiting. The hotel itself feels like an attraction. Inside you'll find beautifully restored industrial architecture mixed with luxury finishes, unique artwork, and even enormous fossil displays that make you feel like you're walking through a natural history museum.

It was unlike any hotel I've ever visited and quickly became one of my favorite stops in Savannah.

The Food

Savannah certainly didn't disappoint when it came to food.

One meal we couldn't miss was The Pirate's House, one of Savannah's most famous historic restaurants. Walking through the building feels like stepping back in time, and it's easy to see why it's been a favorite among visitors for generations. We even got a FREE tour led by a pirate around the restaurant, looking into the secret Pirate Tunnels!

Another standout was Poe's Tavern, where we enjoyed a relaxed atmosphere and fantastic food inspired by Edgar Allan Poe. It was the perfect casual stop after a busy day of sightseeing.

Exploring the Historic District

One thing I loved most about Savannah was how walkable everything is.

We spent hours wandering through the Historic District, discovering beautiful architecture, hidden courtyards, moss-covered oak trees, and charming squares around nearly every corner.

We also visited City Market, where you'll find local boutiques, art galleries, restaurants, and live entertainment. It's a great place to browse, grab a drink, and soak in Savannah's creative atmosphere.

Forsyth Park

No trip to Savannah would be complete without visiting Forsyth Park.

The iconic white fountain is even more beautiful in person, and the park offers wide walking paths, towering oak trees, and plenty of places to relax. It's one of those locations that perfectly captures the beauty and character of Savannah.

Ghosts and Gravestones Tour

Since Savannah is often called one of America's most haunted cities, we couldn't leave without taking the Ghosts & Gravestones tour.

Whether you believe in ghosts or not, the tour was incredibly entertaining. Our guide shared fascinating stories about Savannah's history, famous residents, and legendary hauntings while taking us through some of the city's most historic locations after dark.

It was a fun way to experience a different side of Savannah and definitely added to the overall experience.

Visiting SCAD

We also spent some time exploring the campus of the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD).

The campus blends seamlessly into the city's historic architecture while showcasing beautiful art installations and creative spaces. It's easy to see how SCAD has become such an important part of Savannah's culture and revitalization.

Final Thoughts

Our 2½ days in Savannah flew by, but we managed to experience so much—from historic landmarks and incredible restaurants to beautiful parks and unique attractions.

If you're looking for a destination that's easy to explore on foot, packed with history, filled with amazing food, and perfect for a long weekend, Savannah should absolutely be on your travel list.

Travel Tip: Stay near River Street if possible. Being able to walk to many of Savannah's top attractions made our trip more relaxing and allowed us to spend less time driving and more time enjoying the city.

I already know I'll be back. There are still museums to explore, river cruises to take, and countless restaurants I'd love to try. Until next time, Savannah!
